Carbon Monoxide Alarms

What makes an RV carbon monoxide detector different from a household CO alarm?

An RV carbon monoxide detector is designed for recreational vehicle installation. Most models are hardwired to your coach's 12V DC system and are listed to UL 2034 for RV use. Household alarms typically run on 120V AC or batteries and are not built for RV wiring or road vibration. Hardwired 12V alarms depend on steady voltage. If your alarm chirps or false-alarms when the house battery runs low, check the battery and your 55 amp RV power converter before replacing the alarm.

Is an RV CO2 detector the same as a carbon monoxide detector?

No. CO2 is carbon dioxide and CO is carbon monoxide, and they are different gases. Most searches for an "RV CO2 detector" are looking for a CO alarm. A CO alarm detects the odorless gas produced when LP appliances, furnaces, or generators burn fuel incompletely. The alarms in this collection are built to detect carbon monoxide, not to measure carbon dioxide.

Where should I mount a camper carbon monoxide detector?

Install at least one CO alarm in or near the sleeping area, and follow the manufacturer's mounting height instructions. Keep the alarm away from the range, furnace supply vents, and entry doors to reduce nuisance alarms. Combination LP/CO alarms are usually mounted low on the wall because propane is heavier than air. The most common CO sources in a camper are the furnace, range, generator exhaust, and gas water heater. If your alarm sounds while a 10 gallon RV water heater or furnace is running, have the burner and venting inspected. Never disable the alarm.

How often should I replace an RV carbon monoxide alarm?

CO sensors have a limited service life, typically 5 to 7 years depending on the manufacturer. Check the manufacture date on the back label. Many units also give a distinct end-of-life signal when the sensor expires. Press the test button monthly and replace the alarm when it reaches its rated life, even if it still powers on.

Will a replacement CO detector for my RV fit the existing mounting location?

Not always. RV CO alarms come in surface-mount and flush-mount styles, and cutout sizes vary by brand. Before ordering, write down the model number on your existing alarm (for example, a Safe-T-Alert 45-741), then confirm the voltage, mounting style, and cutout dimensions.
